For most homes, a professional service every one to two years is sensible. The right interval does depend on the system’s age, design, usage and the manufacturer’s recommendations. Check that the system is actually transferring heat

A sunny roof does not automatically mean the household is benefiting from the energy collected. The collectors may be hot while poor circulation, air in the circuit, a control issue or a faulty sensor prevents heat reaching the cylinder.

You can look at your controller display for warning symbols, unusual temperatures or messages that were not there before. Notice patterns too. If the system used to provide plenty of hot water in spring and summer but now struggles on similar days, it is worth investigating.
