A solar thermal system can look perfectly healthy on a bright day yet still deliver disappointing hot water. Signs your solar thermal system may be out of balance

Repeated overheating messages, an unusually noisy pump, or pipework that seems excessively hot close to the collectors are also worth attention. If there is a flow meter, its reading may be outside the commissioning figure recorded for the installation. A reading alone is not the whole diagnosis, though. Air in the system can produce similar symptoms, as can a partially restricted valve, a failing pump, degraded fluid or a sensor fault. This is why clear fault diagnosis is preferable to replacing parts on guesswork.

The work normally begins with a visual inspection and a conversation about how the system has been performing. A technician will check the controller display, operating temperatures, pump activity and any fault history. Keeping a simple record of when the system performs poorly is useful, especially if the issue is intermittent. If a part needs replacement, fitting the correct genuine component is usually better value than forcing an unsuitable substitute into an older system.
